Why People Believe That Search Engine Optimization Is A Scam

By Eugene Yeng

Of all the technological innovations that a business can get for their company's online presence, SEO remains one of the most closed off and complicated. Because of this internal, inward facing world of experts, there are many reasons why some believe that Search Engine Optimization is a scam. Simply put, the higher the level of complication for a particular skill, the more likely people are to think that they are being tricked or deceived when they cannot understand what is being done to heighten their online presence.

It is a common, though highly flawed, perception for people to have. It is also easily understandable when considering the general attitude humans have towards innovation. They are, at heart, a conservative species who do not take kindly to massive new innovations being thrust upon them. They are not necessarily misguided in this. Because it is such a new sector, those who have managed to learn how to make SEO work most effectively have, in some rare cases, kept their clients in the dark so as to ensure their continued employment.

Being open and transparent is not a bad thing though. They need to try and break down what they do into simple tasks so that people can begin to understand what they do and why they are worth the investment. They do not have to give away all their secrets in doing this, however.

If they do not, people who are experts in this field run the risk of appearing as if they are trying to hide something. There is an opinion that changing a few words in a sentence to make it better for spiders to pick up the hint this is something which should be recorded and tracked could not possible alter the way internet giants such as Google look at websites - even though it is true.

In a similar vein, the whole industry risks being tarred with the same brush because of a select few unscrupulous individuals. Those who have minimal or no actual SEO experience are able to pass themselves off as experts because the industry is unregulated and relatively new. Clients are so unaware of what goes on in the mystical world of SEO that they would not be able to differentiate between the good and bad experts before hiring them.

Clients, who have been kept in the dark by those who are reputable, will be none the wiser as to their being scammed. It is an easy way to make money from doing very little or, in fact, nothing.

This is a worrying and real blight to the industry. People need to ensure that those who are good at what they do make sure their clients are aware that they are trustworthy and skilled. Without this, unscrupulous people run the risk of ruining the industry for those who are trustworthy.

A closed off world of SEO experts benefits precisely no one. There needs to be some openness, other people will continue in their assertion, questioning why some believe that Search Engine Optimization is a scam.
