The reason is that you have to not only come up with what should be done, but you must accomplish it yourself as well. Whether your competitor is online or off-line does not matter; it is only important that you know what they are doing and learn from them. The thing about competitors is that they will always have another item to sell your existing or potential clientele. Competition is not bad, but should be used as a thermometer to determine which products are hot or not. What you need to do is uncover what is selling for them and what is sitting on the shelf. This works perfectly because you will know which items are selling, at what price, and how you can improve your own sales strategies. It is important to not overcharge for a service or product that you have that is inferior to your competition as this will not help your bottom line. Today, many people do most of their marketing online. No matter what kind of business you have, though, you shouldn't ignore the traditional, offline methods of promoting yourself. This can start with having a professional set of business cards. This is a simple way to give new contacts your number and website info, and it adds to your credibility. You may also want to take advantage of print advertising, whether locally or in nationwide publications. Depending on the type of business you have, it might be a good idea to get listed in your local phone directory. The yellow pages aren't the resource they once were, but many people still consult them to find certain services.

Much has been written on the importance of goals, and for good reason, as it's something every business should focus on. You should have personal goals, but also ones that are designed specifically for your business. It's best to have both short and long term goals.
