Luxury Watches And Their Many Features

By Yolanda Sanchez

In order to find value for money and an excellent product, buyers of luxury watches should be aware of what to look for. Buying a watch from someone is often a special occasion. As the purchase is quite often for a partner, child or family member, it is important that the purchaser is aware of what constitutes a good watch.

The transparent protective cover of a watch is known as the crystal. Generally, there are now only two types of crystal used which are sapphire and glass. Sapphire is a relatively rare material and its presence is usually a sign of a quality watch. While glass scratches more, it is much less susceptible to shattering.

While the models that use the mineral crystals tend to be cheaper, they rarely shatter after hard impact. Sapphire crystals are hard wearing however, and maintain a 'new' appearance for many years. The more expensive the watch, the more likely the crystal will be made from a thick crystal. It is important that the purchaser checks that the watch is made from sapphire crystal before purchasing.

Although it may sound obvious, the general construction of a watch is a good indication of its quality. The very best timepieces should be made from the finest quality materials. Most watches are made from steel and it is a good idea to check it is grade 316L steel. The steel should also be solid with no hollow areas or folded steel.

Another critical factor to look for is the watch movement. While there are several movements on the market, it is widely believed that the Japanese and Swiss movements offer the most accurate and reliable time-keeping. Most experts will advise against purchasing Chinese movements. There are two main forms which are quartz and mechanical. Both should offer excellent accuracy if they are genuine Japanese or Swiss makes.

The general look and feel of a luxury watch should also be checked closely. This will normally involve the buyer getting a feel for the piece as well as wearing it. The clasp and buckle should operate in a smooth fashion and not make unnecessary noise. There should also be minimal noise when moving around with the watch on. Reputable sellers will always allow a customer to try a watch on.
